Images by Asumtek. We were contracted in 2014 to work on a 1.3 million square foot Paint Shop for General Motors. Asumtek was required to develop a 400 LOD BIM model for the main electrical contractor of the project. There was a fast track schedule and the client also required Asumtek to provide very detailed shop drawings of the BIM model to assist them with the prefabrication of as many supports as possible. These supports were fabricated prior to the installation of equipment by other trades. The client was able to reduce their overhead cost by installing their supports ahead of schedule.
Using advanced BIM technologies and working closely with the client’s engineers, the team was able to prefabricate around 2500 supports for the cable tray, busway and lighting systems. We created 280 shop drawing sheets which were used to prefabricate all the supports. These drawings were also used onsite to install all of the supports with minimal field manipulation required. In some ways the drawings we generated could be likened more to those of a Lego building instruction set than traditional installation drawings. The project was completed in 2015.
